Take Comfort
God is Love.
God is Hope.
God is Life.
God is Father.
God is Helper.
God is Counselor.
His attributes have no end, and now that I am writing publicly, I have recently been sitting with the reality that God is also Author. He is the original author. The author of life and death and creation itself, in addition to the written Word.
I sit and ponder in amazement that God, himself, created and composed through people a book to bring instruction, to bring hope, to bring warning and to bring help to me personally. This word has lasted through centuries and yet continues to pierce through the world and my heart, alike, with applicable truth.
His very words, providentially spoken throughout history are recorded for us to delve into, to wrestle with, and to consult. How gracious and loving of him. Throughout scripture, his words collaborate seamlessly and intentionally to woo and to warn.
God woos us to himself through his provision of love, his counsel, his oversight, his consistency and he warns us of his judgement and of death that comes from pursuing a life completely apart from him. Part of his wooing us to himself is not only through his speaking of the promises, but in his keeping of the promises.
I read in Psalm 119: 50 that our comfort in times of affliction come through his promises. It helped my heart to remember some of his promises and I pray they encourage you too.
God promises to:
Stay
I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 ESV
Save
… “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 ESV
Satisfy
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Matt 5:6 ESV
Sustain
“Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you…” Psalm 55:22 ESV
If he is a God who keeps his promises then we can find comfort in the fact that he is worthy of our trust today.
He is worthy, and his promises never fail.
May I encourage you to ponder the words of this song as you go through your week? It is one of my very favorites.
Listen here - IS HE WORTHY
by Chris Tomlin
Do you feel the world is broken?
(We do)
Do you feel the shadows deepen?
(We do)
But do you know that all the dark won't stop the light from getting through?
(We do)
Do you wish that you could see it all made new?
(We do)
Is all creation groaning?
(It is)
Is a new creation coming?
(It is)
Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst?
(It is)
Is it good that we remind ourselves of this?
(It is)
Is anyone worthy?
Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David's root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slaves.
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Of all blessing and honor and glory
Is He worthy of this?
HE IS.
